The concept of binding and loosing are fundamental to intercession. Jesus introduces the concept of binding and loosing in Matthew 16:19. In the preceding verses, Peter has just declared that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus tells him that he is blessed because this has not been revealed to him by flesh and blood, but by the Father in heaven. He then goes on to say that upon the rock of this revelation, He will build His church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. v.19 states,
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
